Six RC piers of Cleddau Bridge, extending up to 35 m above water level, were strengthened by wrapping up to seven layers of carbon fibre fabric around the upper 1.8 m and impregnating it with epoxy resin. The resulting CFRP composite was designed to resist bursting forces beneath the bearings in conjunction with pre-tensioned steel bars.

Prior to the strengthening works being carried out, a migrating corrosion inhibitor was applied to the surface of the concrete.
