Tony Gee carried out the design of seven main bridges across road, river and rail for the new highway, which provides a much awaited enhancement of this busy road linking the M1 with the south of Nottingham.

From the outset, an important part of the design brief was to challenge ai???conventionalai??i?? construction methods and incorporate precast components to provide programme, cost and safety benefits for the project.

All the detailed design was prepared in accordance with the agreed BIM protocol and using AutoCAD 3D-Revit and collaboration software to ensure the accurate and efficient supply of information for precast manufacture as part of Laing Oai??i??Rourkeai??i??s DFMA initiative.

As the existing A453 carriageway remained in use – the new precast components including piers, shells, crossheads and beams were continually fed onto site with the erection proceeding at pace as the new bridges take shape off-line. Following the switch of traffic onto the new carriageway, the existing route was refurbished to allow the completed dual carriageway to open.
